Rotterdam is unique. Home to Europe’s largest port, the second biggest city of the Netherlands has always been closely connected to national and international developments. Forever marked by the devastating bombing of 14 May 1940, Rotterdam is a place that is constantly reinventing itself.
But what came before that fateful day? What role has Rotterdam played in the Dutch past? And how much of it can we still see in a city that has lost nearly its entire historical core? How have the city and the country developed post-war?
Rather than merely showing you some of Rotterdam’s highlights, this tour will take you through the exciting and often turbulent history of both the country and the city. Learn about the role of the geography of the Netherlands and how its location, so close to the major European powers England, France and Germany, has impacted its story throughout the ages. An exciting ride with Rotterdam’s water taxi is included.
This tour will address: the Dutch Revolt, the rise and fall of the Republic of the United Provinces, living with water, the French period in the Netherlands, the (United) Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dutch colonial history, World War I, the interbellum, World War II and the post-war history of the Netherlands.
Duration: approximately 3 – 3½ hours.
Distance covered on foot: approximately 5 kilometres, with an opportunity for a break in Hotel New York.
